*tick tick tick tick* - *tick tick tick tick*
All of us heard it. At first the ones who were still listening to analog radio, then it went viral. First we thought that it was some random undiscovered number station, but when the army and NASA publicly freaked out we knew it was something serious.
"The Ticking" as it's now known is immensely powerful. They even had to shutdown satellite internet because it was overpowering it. The weird part? It was quickly discovered that it's coming from deep space, from a patch of of space devoid of any stars. I don't recall how it's called now.
Rumors and conspiracies quickly spread across the internet. Some people said it was some yet undiscovered natural phenomenon, some people thought it was aliens. Oh how wrong they were.
As I'm sitting here, writing this I'm sad that I haven't seen the world and that I won't have a chance to hold my girlfriend in my arms or say goodbye. Last week, a powerful EMP from that same part of space swept the planet, frying the grid and the internet infrastructure, which means I don't have any way to communicate with her and tell her I love her, since she lives in the Europe and I live in the US. Where exactly? Does it even matter? Now that all of us will die soon?
Why you ask? It is the clicking, or at least the source of it apparently. It seems to some smart people to be a ping of some sort to worlds, I don't know why. No one does. All I know is that we shouldn't have replied. Well, NASA and all governments didn't want to, but some billionaire decided it would be fun to repeat the signal back to it's source. Three hours later our power was lost and chaos ensued. Military had to step in and quell the unrest, now we're all under curfew and the ones who has battery radios that are operational can listen to government broadcast. My family does but I don't care. I overheard the soldiers outside talking about it.
They say that minutes after we lost power some observatory in New Mexico detected a "wall of void" and that the entire universe is disappearing. It is cloudy here so I don't see the sky, but they also said that they are supposed to keep the civilians around here calm for their last moments and that this is the end. One solider broke down and cried and when the neighbors next door realized they committed suicide while holding one another. I know that my dad is praying but I don't care about anything now. I'm just sitting here and crying.
So yeah, the lesson from all of this? Don't respond to unknown signals from space, it might be aliens who black out the sky and destroy the world. Or even warning from other worlds about the impending doom. I don't know what it is, all I know that I'm scared and that I miss my girlfriend.
And that thing that's gonna take us away from each other?
Well, I call it Void.
